Food is at the heart of our community at Kindernest Montessori Early Childcare Center. When we opened our school in Newton, MA this year, we knew we had to embrace the philosophy that providing nourishment through food is just as essential as providing an enriching learning environment. This philosophy is rooted and inspired by Montessori’s Italian heritage, which emphasizes that food naturally connects children to their community, fostering independence, care, and social connection.
Often, children are left out of the process of food preparation and mealtime conversation, but at Kindernest Montessori, it’s quite the opposite. Children prepare food daily in the classroom,
and learn skills such as baking bread, peeling carrots, and making juice. Through these activities,
they learn to care for themselves, contribute to the community, and experience the joy of
creation.
The table becomes a place of empowerment, where children set plates, distribute silverware,
serve themselves and make their own choices about how much they wish to eat. We believe that
fostering independence is one of the greatest gifts we can give to children.
Dining together reflects our core values of connection, balance, listening to our bodies, and
slowing down to savor the tastes, smells, and sounds of mealtime. We encourage children to add
beauty to the table—whether it’s a flower arrangement, a special stick, or a meaningful rock they
found. These touches create a sense of joy, participation, and sharing.
Meals at Kindernest are never rushed. We are proudly part of the slow-food
movement, honoring the pleasure and importance of mealtime as a communal and nourishing
experience.
Did we mention? Meals are included in tuition. If you are interested in learning more about enrolling at Kindernest, visit the Kindernest Montessori Early Childcare Enrollment Guide.
