Babies come into the world with a sweet gentleness, open and eager to embrace the experiences that will shape who they are and who they will become. From the very first moment of life, new parents feel an overwhelming rush of love and protectiveness that they could never have imagined just moments before meeting their child. This profound moment connects us all as parents and educators, in a shared understanding of the immense importance of early life experiences.

Fostering Gentleness & Curiosity
There is a direct link between the love and wonder a child experiences in infancy and their first introduction to the Montessori classroom. Children enter with an open mind, ready to explore the wonders before them, form meaningful friendships, and engage with materials that will guide their learning. These friendships are significant as they are foundational to a child's social development. A new world opens up and the child becomes an active participant in the
ongoing adventure of discovery.
The Montessori classroom serves as a unique passageway, meeting the child where they are in
their development and encouraging them to grasp their individuality and creative potential.
Simple Activities Lead to Profound Discoveries
I recently observed one of our expert Montessori toddler educators introduce a simple yet profound activity to the children: leaf dusting. Before the materials were placed on the shelf, the teacher thoughtfully cut small washcloths and carefully sewed the edges so they would fit perfectly in little hands. These cloths were neatly folded and arranged on a tray, accompanied by a small spray bottle of water.
With quiet intent, the children watched as the teacher demonstrated the process—spraying the
leaf and gently wiping away the dust. It was magical to witness the leaf transform from dull to
vibrant, awakening in front of their eyes. Suddenly, the children began to see the leaves as living
beings, eager to clean and care for each one.
This simple task of dusting leaves teaches children many valuable lessons—respect for nature,
care for the environment, a sense of responsibility and purpose, and, most importantly, empathy
for all living things.
